Employee handbook – it might sound like something from a bread factory in the 1980s, but it’s a name that’s easy to understand: a (digital) handbook for all of us who are already at FRIDAY – and for the many new, wonderful, and talented colleagues who will join us in the future. Here, you can find information about our daily life – what we do, what we don’t do, and why. If you’re new to FRIDAY, welcome to our world!
We work as a team and value a flat structure. That can be hard to navigate as a newcomer, so we asked some of our latest colleagues how to get off to a great start. In many places, it’s about keeping your head down. That’s absolutely not the case here. Here, it’s about standing out. At FRIDAY, we have a lot of smart minds under one roof. If you’re here too, it means you’ve got something to offer – and we want to hear from you.
The important thing is that you get from A to B. At FRIDAY, we value the whole person, and that comes with different work rhythms. Some work best from a spa, while others thrive in Bredgade. We believe you work best when you’re inspired, so there’s no point in being chained to your desk from 9 to 5 just because.
It’s your task to figure out where you fit in. At FRIDAY, the social aspect is important, and probably more so than in many other places. It’s also the key to getting work. The entire structure is built on making yourself available for assignments, and that happens by getting to know each other and understanding what everyone is working on. Prioritize to get to know your colleagues. Stay close.
At FRIDAY, we believe in multiple bottom lines beyond just the financial one, and we see them as interdependent. FRIDAY should be a place where we feel good.
Together, we’ve developed our own well-being analysis, where we have collectively defined the key areas that are important for us to measure – both for the team and for the individual. It consists of 20 questions rated on a scale from 1 to 9 and is conducted every six months. After each analysis, we review the results together and identify focus areas for improvement until the next survey.
We’re proud that so many feel welcomed with smiles and positive energy at FRIDAY, and that so many would recommend others to work here. Our focus areas for improvement include creating more space for deep work and getting better at providing feedback.
Speak up, take action. It’s hard to find an organization flatter than FRIDAY. Anyone with an idea gets heard, and anyone who takes on a task is seen and receives all the collegial support needed to carry it forward. We are deeply committed to ensure that what we deliver is the best it can possibly be.
That’s why we’re all so eager to share our good ideas. FRIDAY is filled with smart people who have gained solid experience in virtually every industry you can think of. Take full advantage of that every day. It makes ideas better, our clients happier, and you smarter!
Anyone who wishes to do so can choose a mentor at FRIDAY. A mentor is an experienced advisor who can help guide your development. The mentor is a more informal sparring partner compared to what happens during performance reviews or daily management. You and your mentor decide on the format of your conversations. You choose what to discuss and how to meet – whether it’s a walk and talk or over a cup of coffee.
Use your mentor as you see fit. Challenge yourself and your mentor with the tough, fun, crazy, or personal questions – it will surely help you grow into an even better version of yourself. Your conversations will remain confidential.
We learn best through practice. The “Jump Seat” is FRIDAY’s version of ‘watch and learn.’ Call it apprenticeship or peer learning, but here’s how it works: If there’s an area you want to know more about, you can reach out to the FRIDAY colleagues working in that field and ask to “take a jump seat.”
For example, you might see yourself as FRIDAY’s next big media trainer and want to sit in on a session Mikael and Sune are running. Or you can join Max and Pau for a day of film shooting. The goal is to sharpen your skills and broaden your knowledge.
At FRIDAY, we the work environment is greatly important to us – both the physical and the mental aspects. The physical environment follows clear guidelines, which must be strictly adhered to, just like the Employment Act and Data Protection Law.
The mental work environment is harder to structure with clear processes, but it’s one of the most important factors. We are mindful of it and actively work on it through semi-annual well-being analyses and performance reviews, as well as by fostering transparency and being open to dialogue in our daily work.
Yes, having a cool job is great, but if you ask us, work is never more important than family. It’s all about balance. Everyone knows parental leave goes hand in hand with coffee, so during your leave, we provide a coffee card for your nearest café and a subscription to a newspaper or magazine of your choice. If you’ve been with us for a year, you’re also entitled to paid parental leave.
For mothers, this means up to DKK 35,000 over 28 weeks, and for fathers, the same amount over 8 weeks (also applicable for adoption). Other parental leave conditions are regulated by law. Afterward, you’re of course entitled to take the child’s first sick day off. But let’s be honest – who’s ever heard of an ear infection or chickenpox being cured in one day? If your workload allows it, take an extra day at home, get help from a colleague, or let us know, and we’ll find a solution that allows for extra care.
We love our office spaces on the 4th and 5th floors of Sankt Annæ Passage. The light, the coffee, the colleagues! It’s obviously easiest to collaborate when we’re here at the same time. But we also understand that sometimes you need a day at home for more peace and quiet to better focus. Or maybe you’re waiting for a TDC technician to show up between 8 AM and 6 PM… That’s why, of course, you can work from home. Just check in on Slack, so your colleagues know where you are and when they can reach you.
Sometimes, you need to completely unplug – see the world, write a book, or something else entirely. That’s perfectly okay too. At FRIDAY, you have the option of unpaid leave if you need a break. Just have a chat with Mikael (CEO), and we’ll take it from there.
By giving our colleagues and ideas maximum freedom, we foster a more creative and innovative approach to our work. The result is often better and more interesting ideas, making our work more enjoyable and delivering greater value to our clients.
Courage is about daring. It’s about leaving “the usual” behind, stepping outside the lines, challenging the boundaries, and together discovering and exploring new possibilities to achieve the goal.
Our actions may stir things up before achieving results and cause confusion before clarity. Turbulence means unpredictability and the ability to stay agile. It’s deeply ingrained in us to challenge conventional thinking and experiment with new ideas.
We may not save the world, but we make an effort to help where we can—whether for our clients, colleagues, or through volunteer work. Generosity is about giving without expecting anything in return, simply because it makes the world a slightly better place.
Wanting to make the world a better place is about who we are as people. FRIDAY is made up of a remarkable group of individuals. But as a business with both small and very large clients in Danish and international markets, it’s also about prioritizing who we choose to work for – based on more than just revenue. Our values and views on the world only matter, if that part isn’t for sale.
At FRIDAY, we work with clients across nearly all industries, from pro bono work for charitable organizations and public authorities to some of Denmark’s largest and most important companies. There are industries we typically choose not to work with, including the arms industry, tobacco industry, and religious movements. On top of that, each person has their own moral compass. As a consultant at FRIDAY, you can refuse to take on certain client tasks for ethical reasons.
That said, we’re not naïve. Neither we, nor the world, can exist on charity alone in its current form. But we always strive to influence clients and individuals to contribute positively to society – to make the world a little better.
At its core, FRIDAY is a partner-owned company that delivers the very best to its clients while being internally structured in a way that offers maximum flexibility, inclusivity, and intelligence. This allows every partner and employee to achieve the highest level of freedom while pursuing their most ambitious professional goals for the benefit of themselves and others in the company. Our mission is to help others become better versions of themselves within the society we all share.
Our tools are communication, which we apply through consulting, production, and project management. This includes leadership development, positioning, copywriting, film production, strategies, campaigns, graphics, and design. We stand at the forefront, but in the second row. The world isn’t about FRIDAY, but rather about our clients. As advisors and producers, we are rarely in the spotlight, but we must be indispensable to those who are – supporting their products, services, and visions for the world.
There are very few workplaces in Denmark that offer as much freedom as we do at FRIDAY. We’re not fond of rigid schedules, so feel free to have your morning coffee with an old friend, head to the summer house early with your family, or make it to your hairdresser appointment. Take your work seriously and take your freedom seriously. We care about more important things than monitoring when you’re not in the office. Just let us know on Slack where in the world you are.
With freedom comes responsibility. At FRIDAY, everyone is a responsible, mature adult who knows how to manage their day sensibly and consistently deliver work of the highest quality. We each take responsibility for ensuring that our clients and colleagues are happy. That happens when we keep our promises and deliver on time. It’s really quite simple.
It’s always a bit more fun when the ties come off (even though we rarely wear ties) and the music gets turned up. We love spending time with each other and our clients, which is why FRIDAY is filled with colleagues, clients, partners, friends, and friends of friends for our annual in-house Harvest Party in September.
We also love our rolling FRIDAY bar, the “FRIDAY Cart,” which is enthusiastically managed by our dedicated interns and student assistants. Around 3 PM, they roll out with drinks, snacks, and high spirits. Of course, we also celebrate together at the annual Christmas party.
As mentioned, we rarely get tired of each other, so we’ve created FRIDAY Social. You can sign up whenever you have time and feel like it. Events range from a few hours at Bib Bib Bar to an evening at the museum or a burger and bingo night. These events are financially supported by FRIDAY and are held every few months.
For the sporty types, we have FRIDAY Sport, where we compete in badminton, geek out with pétanque in Kgs. Have, or cool off with a dip in the harbor on hot summer days.
Uniquely, our younger team members have formed a group called Junior Partners, meant for members under 30. The group serves as ambassadors for juniors at FRIDAY and, through shared activities, works to create an even better community and work environment for the younger team members. No special grades are required to join the Junior Partners – just a willingness to be social and get to know each other better.
With a notable increase in the number of young people at FRIDAY, we love this initiative. FRIDAY supports the group financially so the Junior Partners can bond through fun activities and two dinners a year.
Folkemødet is a celebration of democracy and dialogue in Denmark. When we attend Folkemødet, we set up in an old candle factory called Fabers, named after its sweet and strong owner, Lulu Faber. Normally a cultural café, it during Folkemødet becomes FRIDAY’s event venue and the coziest spot in Allinge. Here, we host debates and events with our clients and partners.
We’ve covered topics like refugee camps near the Syrian border, the power of the media, morning songs, a tribute to H.C. Ørsted, Greenlandic music, Kaffemik, and much more. The only rule is that it must be relevant. We don’t organize anything we wouldn’t attend ourselves.
Oh, and we’ve cracked the code for hosting the best party at Folkemødet on FRIDAY night. The recipe is simple: grilled sausages, draft beer, and an energetic DJ. Most importantly, Folkemødet is something we run together. It’s teambuilding, professional development, and a party all rolled into one.
Since 2017, FRIDAY has supported and hosted the 5 Skoler Association, which builds tent schools for refugee children who otherwise have no access to education. The work is ongoing, and the association currently operates ten schools along the Turkish/Syrian border. To date, the organization has provided schooling for over 400 children.
For FRIDAY, this partnership makes sense. Not only are we helping to make a difference for the children, but everyone at FRIDAY is free to assist the association with tasks like copywriting, web development, consulting, PR, and video production whenever they have the time and interest.
Our favorite day at FRIDAY is (surprise!) Friday. It’s a tradition that everyone who can, gathers for breakfast. Beyond the organic juice, sourdough bread from Buka, and weekend plan exchanges, it’s also an opportunity to stand up and share professional insights. We also enjoy having guest speakers drop by during the morning meeting to enlighten us on relevant industry topics.
